General Introduction and confidentiality
The PATSy Web-database consists of data from research patients / participants. This includes test items, participant responses, video, medical histories and other information. PATSy-users have access to authentic case data, however, to protect the participant's privacy, the participants' names and addresses are fictionalised. Since participants on PATSy are not-anonymised, PATSy users are requested to treat PATSy data as one might regard a confidential document. Always quit the browser when you have finished a PATSy session. Your password is restricted to your own use.

Is your computer setup to run PATSy?
PATSy may be accessed from either a Mac or a pc computer using either Internet Explorer or Netscape (version 4.0 thereon) within the University or from an internet-connected machine elsewhere. In order to protect participant confidentiality, videos are only available to machines on the University network.

Gaining access to PATSy

  • Check computer is switched on
  • Check headphones are available & plugged in (if needed)
  • Activate the browser (netscape or internet explorer)
  • Type in url http://www.patsy.ac.uk/

The lab machines have been set up to run PATSy. If you are working from another location, you should check whether the computer you are using has the technical set up to run PATSy. Click on "System requirements" and follow the instructions. Check the sound level is turned up too. Seek technical assistance if you cannot manage this. Once you can play the video and audio PATsy subsamples on your computer, then proceed with your work. When it asks for username. Type in your own username Next, type in you're the patsy password assigned to you (note one or both may be case-sensitive).

PASSWORD: If you do not have a password, please contact your local PATSy administrator

Familiarise yourself with PATSy's front page
Please read "Confidentiality and terms of use agreement" "A simple walk-through of the PATSy system, with no passwords required." Look in "About PATSy and subscription" for general information. Now go "Home"

Steps to seeing a participant called MSL

  • Click on "Student" to access Student mode of access
  • Select access type "Information Only" under Session properties.
  • Click on "Go to participants" to find MSL
  • Select MSL
  • See MSL - Click on "QTMovie 1" (Wait as it can take time for a video to download-can cause some dysynchrony).
  • Replay the video by clicking on the button on the bar under the video panel. Use headphones if possible. If there is no sound, check control-sound or on megaphone icon on video panel are both turned up).
  • Click on "Back" on browser toolbar above to return to MSL's menu
  • Click on "About PATSy videos" and read the panel.
  • Click "Close this window"

Steps to finding other information connected with MSL

  • Click on "Medical history for the participant"
  • Click "Close this window"
  • Click "about PATSy medical records"
  • Click "Close this window"
  • Click on "Tutorial questions"
  • Click "Close this window"

Steps to access MSL's test data

  • Click on the test of interest to you eg, "ADA L1: Lexical decision (spoken). (Note: Test with sound files can take slightly longer to download. Please be patient)
  • DON'T FORGET TO CLOSE THE AUDIO PANELS AFTER IT HAS PLAYED.(click on the corner to close the panel. Avoids them building up and causing the computer to crash due to memory over-load.).

You can see the test items and their respective scores now. You may, if you wish, 'administer' each test item to MSL to gain a sense of what this test required from MSL by clicking on individual test item buttons (e.g listen to stimulus) and response buttons (e.g. reveal)

Next,

  • Click on "about this test" at top of the page.
  • Click on "norms" at the top of the page.
  • Click on "Result summary for this test" to see MSL's test results.

When finished,

  • Click on "Test list for MSL"
  • Select another test of interest.
  • Repeat these test access procedures for the other tests of interest to you.

Steps to terminate your PATSy session
(important to avoid an unauthorised person accessing PATSy)

For Macs

  • Got to the browser's File drop-down menu
  • Select "Quit" or "Exit" which quits the browser.
  • Then Shut down from the Special menu

For (pcs) computers

  • Select "Home" (at bottom)
  • Go to "File" on the top menu of the Web page
  • Select "Exit" which quits the browser
  • Select "Start" in the left bottom corner of the page.
  • Select "Log Off."
  • Select "yes" when it asks if you want to log off.
  • To SHUT DOWN, Go to "Start" and then select "Shut down"
